Palak Khichdi | Dal Khichdi Recipe

Palak khichdi is a rice and red lentil based dish with spinach added to make it wholesome and nutritious. Make this easy and protein-rich recipe for lunch and enjoy it with your family.

Palak Khichdi

Palak Dal Khichdi or khichuri is prepared with rice, masoor dal and few spices. It is tempered with fried onion, ginger and garlic. Accompany it with a bowl of curd and papad. A complete meal which is delicious, comforting and filled with nutrients.

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 25 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes

Serves: 3-4

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups palak or spinach
  • ½ cup rice, soaked in water for 15 minutes
  • ½ cup masoor dal or split red lentils, soaked in water for 15 minutes
  • 2 green chillies
  • ⅔ cup green peas
  • 1-medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1-inch cinnamon
  • 4 green cardamoms
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 tbsp ghee or clarified butter
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste

Cooking Directions:

Wash the spinach leaves under cold water. Boil water in a pot and then add the spinach leaves. Boil for 2 minutes. Drain the water.

In a blender jar, add blanched spinach leaves and green chillies. Blend to make a smooth paste.

Fill a pot with water and heat it on high flame. Add the rice and masoor dal. Bring it to a boil.

Lower the flame to medium, add salt, sugar and turmeric powder. Mix it well. Cook for 10 minutes.

Then add the green peas. Cook for 5 minutes.

While it is cooking heat a non-stick pan on medium flame and pour ghee. Add chopped onion. Saute until it softens slightly.

Add ginger-garlic paste and cook till the raw smell disappears.

Add this masala to the khichdi. Mix everything nicely.

Once the rice is almost cooked pour the palak puree. Mix well. Cook for 2 minutes.

In a grinder jar, add cinnamon, green cardamom, cloves and 1 tbsp water. Make a smooth paste.

Add this paste to the palak khichdi and mix well.

      Hi Vasanti, to cook this khichdi in an instant pot, press the saute button and heat ghee and cook the onions. Then add ginger garlic paste. Cook until fragrant. Add rice, masoor dal and green peas. Pour 4-5 cups water, salt, turmeric and sugar. Secure the lid and close the pressure valve. Cook for 15-20 minutes on high pressure. Release pressure and open the lid. Pour spinach mixture, mix well and again pressure cook for 2 minutes on low pressure. Before serving it add the cinnamon-cardamon paste and mix well.
