Lemon Rice | Quick Rice Recipe

Lemon rice is a famous South Indian rice dish. It is bright yellow in colour, tangy and extremely flavourful.

  • 2 cup basmati rice or long grain rice
  • 4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp dark mustard seeds
  • 4 dried red chillies
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp curry leaves thinly sliced
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • Coriander leaves and lemon slices for garnishing


  • Boil water in a pot with some salt. Then add the washed rice. Cook until done. It can take around 10-15 minutes. After that drain the rice with the help of a colander.
  • In a wok, heat oil on medium heat. Add the mustard seeds.
  • Once the seeds crackle, add dried red chillies. Fry for a few seconds.
  • Add turmeric powder and cook for a minute or until its raw smell goes away.
  • Then add the chopped curry leaves, cook for another minute.
  • Add the rice and give it a nice mix. But be gentle as the rice can break.
  • Lower the heat, add salt, lemon juice and lemon zest. Mix again. Remove from heat.
  • Garnish the rice with fresh coriander leaves and lemon slices.
